Article Review
I found the different articles very interesting. One thing that really sticks out in my mind is that fact that teachers are not expected to be experts in the area of computers and software. It’s perfectly ok to learn with the students. Trainers (like yourself Joe), can com into a school and train staff on new equipment. A few pointers were mentioned in one of the articles on how to use technology effectively in my program: I can integrate technology into my larger learning goals. I should teach as if technology is a tool. I should never explain things too deeply when it come to the computer. I should allow the children to explore using technology.
Technology is growing rapidly in schools across the country. In schools today there are set standards in this area. As teachers we can facilitate the learning goals while utilizing technology to further personalize student lessons. Computers are here to stay and we must be able to link learning with the computers. Computers in the classroom can be a link to the outside world as well. Students can make friends across the world through means of video conferencing through Skype. One article stated that one school district is replacing textbooks with laptops. I don’t know how I feel about this. I guess I will have to wait and see. I love how the document camera is used in the classroom. Math can come alive with the use of a document camera. I have seen teachers use the camera to demonstrate the use of math manipulatives. Gone are the days of old overhead projectors. Computers are also a great tool in the area of reading. A teacher can administer a test on the computer and the data is tabulated almost instantly.
I love technology, and I feel that I want to be a step ahead in the classroom when it comes to this area. I know I don’t need to be an expert, but I do want to become proficient. I understand that not every student will come into my classroom with the same background in technology as another child. I am excited to expose my students to the world of technology in my future classroom.
